Product Overview
Winter Bee Hive Wrap & Winterizing Kit
A coordinated winter setup for insulation, moisture management, feeding clearance, and supplemental feed
The Winter Bee Hive Wrap & Winterizing Kit brings together four parts of winter hive management in one setup: an exterior insulation wrap, a moisture board, a shim, and two HiveAlive fondant patties. Each component has a different job, helping address winter wind exposure, upper-hive moisture, space for above-cluster feeding, and accessible supplemental food.
At Lappe's Bee Supply, we have found that winter preparation works best when insulation, moisture management, and accessible supplemental food are considered together rather than relying on a hive wrap alone. Before ordering, make two separate choices: match the moisture board and shim to your 8-frame or 10-frame Langstroth equipment, then choose the wrap height according to the hive bodies that will remain on the colony for winter.

Choose the Correct Configuration Before Ordering
Wrap height and frame count are two separate selection decisions. First determine which hive bodies will remain on the colony for winter. Then select the moisture board and shim that match your 8-frame or 10-frame Langstroth equipment.
New to hive sizing? A deep and a medium are different-height Langstroth hive bodies. Choose the wrap based on the boxes that will actually remain on the colony for winter. The shim is a shallow wooden spacer that creates additional clearance above the upper hive body.
| Selection | Option | Use |
| Wrap height | 20½ inches | Two deep hive bodies |
| Wrap height | 23½ inches | Two deep hive bodies plus one medium |
| Moisture board & shim | 8-frame | Match compatible 8-frame equipment |
| Moisture board & shim | 10-frame | Match compatible 10-frame equipment |
This kit is intended for compatible 8-frame and 10-frame Langstroth hive equipment in the configurations shown above. It is not universally compatible with every hive style, stack, or winter configuration. Selecting the wrong frame format can prevent the shim and moisture board from fitting correctly, while selecting the wrong wrap height can leave the wrap mismatched to the boxes being wintered.

Should You Buy the Complete Kit?
Choose the complete winterizing kit if you need a coordinated setup that includes insulation, upper-hive moisture management, feeding clearance, and supplemental fondant.
Consider buying individual components instead if you already have a compatible wrap, moisture board, shim, or winter feeding setup and only need to replace or add a specific part.
How the Winterizing Kit Works as a System
Insulation and Wind Protection
The exterior wrap helps insulate the hive and reduce direct exposure to cold winter winds. Wind exposure can substantially change the practical value of insulation, so apiary location matters along with the broader regional climate.
Upper-Hive Moisture Management
The moisture board addresses moisture above the winter cluster. Insulation and moisture management serve different functions, so wrapping a hive does not eliminate the need to manage condensation and the overall winter configuration.
Clearance Above the Colony
The shim creates additional space above the upper hive body for the winter arrangement and supplemental fondant. This allows feed to be positioned close to the colony's natural upward movement through winter stores.
Accessible Supplemental Feed
The two included HiveAlive fondant patties provide supplemental winter feed. They are not a predetermined ration for the entire winter, and additional feed may be needed depending on the colony, its existing stores, weather, and the length of winter.
Lappe's Apiary Note: Food Present Is Not Always Food Accessible
In our Iowa apiary, winter conditions can keep colonies tightly clustered for extended periods. In our experience, total food quantity is only part of the winter feeding picture. A colony can have food elsewhere in the hive yet be unable to move far enough to reach it during prolonged cold. That is why we put particular emphasis on keeping supplemental fondant accessible above the cluster when it is needed.
Our rule of thumb is straightforward: prepare the bees first, match the equipment to the hive and local conditions, and continue monitoring the things that can change during winter. This kit is one part of winter colony management rather than a substitute for proper fall preparation.
How to Set Up the Winterizing Kit
- Prepare the colony for winter. Evaluate colony condition, food stores, Varroa management, and the hive configuration before sustained winter weather makes colony work difficult.
- Position supplemental fondant above the winter cluster when needed. Following HiveAlive's feeding instructions, keep the patty in its wrapper, cut a 3-inch opening in the front, and position the opening directly over the brood frames. Do not completely remove the wrapper.
- Place the shim above the upper hive body. The shim provides the clearance needed for the upper winter arrangement and supplemental feed.
- Place the moisture board above the shim. Install the moisture board with the dark side facing upward.
- Install and secure the correctly sized wrap. Match the wrap height to the boxes remaining on the colony.
- Keep the hive functional. Do not make the hive completely airtight. Maintain entrance and moisture-management functions throughout winter.
When Should You Install the Kit?
Install the winter setup before prolonged cold weather makes colony work difficult, using actual seasonal conditions rather than one fixed calendar date. Colony strength, food stores, temperatures, wind exposure, moisture, and local climate all influence appropriate timing.
The same principle applies in spring. Do not remove winter equipment automatically on one calendar date or after a single warm day. Base removal on sustained seasonal conditions and the needs of the colony.

Winter Monitoring
Installing the kit does not end winter management. Conditions and food consumption can change throughout the season. Lappe's monitors the colony and setup with particular attention to:
- Hive weight
- Remaining fondant
- Food accessibility
- Entrance condition
- Wrap security
- Upper-equipment position
- Moisture
If a problem develops, start with the colony and its food supply, then evaluate the complete winter configuration before assuming an individual component has failed. Rapid fondant consumption, inaccessible stores, excessive moisture, blocked entrances, incorrect equipment selection, or a shifted wrap can each require a different response.
Care, Reuse, and Replacement
The reusable wrap, shim, and moisture board can continue to be used while they remain serviceable. Lappe's evaluates winter equipment primarily by function rather than cosmetic appearance or the number of seasons it has been used.
- Clean normal wax and propolis buildup as needed.
- Minor damage may be repaired when the component can still be trusted to perform its intended function.
- Replace a component when damage compromises fit, secure positioning, coverage, clearance, or intended function.
- Do not discard otherwise functional equipment solely because a wrap has weathered, a shim has accumulated wax or propolis, or a moisture board has become discolored.
A useful replacement test is whether you would trust the component to remain functional through the coming winter. If not, replace it rather than depending on a questionable repair.
Storing HiveAlive Fondant Before Use
Keep unused HiveAlive fondant dark and dry. The manufacturer's optimum storage temperature is 50°F to 68°F. Keeping most of the wrapper in place during feeding also helps prevent the fondant from drying out.
Feed products have defined expiration dates and may not have their full shelf life remaining at the time of purchase. If you are ordering feed well in advance of use, contact Lappe's Bee Supply beforehand to confirm expiration dates for current inventory. Product remaining after its expiration date is not eligible for refund or replacement.

Important Winter Expectations
This kit supports several parts of winter hive management, but it does not guarantee successful overwintering. Winter outcomes depend on colony health, Varroa pressure, food stores, population, weather, winter duration, apiary exposure, installation, local climate, and continued management.
- More insulation is not a substitute for adequate food, colony health, Varroa management, or moisture control.
- The same degree of winter protection is not necessary in every climate or apiary.
- A hive wrap should not be used to make the hive completely airtight.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need the 8-frame or 10-frame kit?
Match the moisture board and shim to your Langstroth hive's frame configuration. Choose 8-frame components for compatible 8-frame Langstroth equipment and 10-frame components for compatible 10-frame Langstroth equipment.
Which wrap height do I need?
Choose the 20½-inch wrap when two deep hive bodies will remain for winter. Choose the 23½-inch wrap when the winter stack consists of two deeps plus one medium.
What comes with the Winter Bee Hive Wrap & Winterizing Kit?
The kit includes one winter insulation wrap, one moisture board, one shim, and two HiveAlive fondant patties.
Are the two fondant patties enough for the entire winter?
Not necessarily. The included fondant is supplemental feed rather than a predetermined winter ration. Monitor hive weight, remaining fondant, and food accessibility, and provide additional feed when needed.
Why use a moisture board when the hive is already wrapped?
The wrap and moisture board address different winter concerns. The wrap helps with insulation and direct wind exposure, while the moisture board supports moisture management above the colony.
Where should the fondant be placed?
Lappe's prefers supplemental fondant above the winter cluster, where it remains close to the colony's upward movement through its winter stores. Follow the HiveAlive feeding instructions by keeping the wrapper on, cutting a 3-inch opening, and positioning that opening directly over the brood frames.
Does this kit guarantee that a colony will survive winter?
No. The kit supports insulation, moisture management, feeding clearance, and supplemental feeding, but successful overwintering also depends on colony health, Varroa management, food stores, population, weather, local conditions, and continued monitoring.
Can the wrap, shim, and moisture board be reused?
Yes, while they remain serviceable. Evaluate reusable winter equipment by fit, structural integrity, secure positioning, coverage, clearance, and continued function rather than age or cosmetic appearance alone.
