Product Overview
8 Frame Metal Bee Hive Entrance Reducer & Mouse Guard – Cut to Fit
Reduce the entrance and add a physical mouse barrier with one adjustable metal guard.
The 8 Frame Metal Bee Hive Entrance Reducer & Mouse Guard – Cut to Fit is a metal entrance accessory for standard 8-frame Langstroth equipment. It combines entrance reduction with physical mouse protection while leaving designed openings available for worker-bee passage.
The guard is supplied at 12 5/16" long. Because 8-frame bottom-board configurations can vary, check the fit before installation and trim the guard only when necessary.

Why the Cut-to-Fit Design Matters
An 8-frame designation identifies the intended hive format, but it does not guarantee that every 8-frame bottom-board entrance has the same dimensions or construction. Lappe's Bee Supply has found enough variation in entrance widths, side rails, and bottom-board designs that the actual installation point matters as much as the advertised frame count.
The cut-to-fit design provides flexibility when that variation requires an adjustment. The guard arrives unmodified at its manufactured 12 5/16" length, so cutting is not automatically necessary. Dry-fit it first and shorten it only when the actual entrance requires a shorter length.
Is This Entrance Reducer & Mouse Guard Right for Your Hive?
Choose this model when you use 8-frame Langstroth equipment and want one metal component to provide both entrance reduction and mouse protection. It is particularly useful during fall and winter preparation, when Lappe's Bee Supply uses mouse guards before mice establish a nest inside the hive.
A different product is appropriate for 10-frame equipment. This model may also be a poor fit for a beekeeper expecting a guaranteed drop-in accessory with no possibility of trimming. Bottom-board configuration should be checked before ordering when compatibility is uncertain.
What You Receive
The package contains one 8-frame metal entrance reducer / mouse guard. Screws or nails for fastening are not included.
How the Metal Guard Works
This entrance guard places solid metal across much of the lower hive entrance while retaining designed openings for worker-bee passage. The same component therefore reduces the available entrance and creates a physical metal barrier against mice.
Metal provides an important practical difference when mouse protection is needed: mice cannot readily chew through the guard the way they can damage a wooden entrance reducer. Proper fit still matters. An unintended opening underneath or at an end of the guard can compromise the physical barrier.
Installation: Fit First, Fasten Second
Lappe's Bee Supply rule of thumb is “Fit first, fasten second.” Fastening cannot correct a poor initial fit, debris beneath the guard, excessive length, incorrect positioning, or unintended gaps.
- Inspect the bottom-board entrance and remove material that would interfere with the guard sitting correctly.
- Position the guard across the entrance and check the fit before making any permanent modification.
- If the guard is too long because of the actual entrance or side-rail configuration, trim only as much as necessary.
- After trimming, smooth any sharp or rough cut edge before installation.
- Recheck the fit so the guard sits securely across the entrance without unintended gaps and the designed bee openings remain accessible.
- Fasten the guard with screws or nails supplied separately.
Lappe's Bee Supply Apiary Note
Lappe's Bee Supply recommends installing mouse protection before mouse evidence appears, particularly as colonies are prepared for fall and winter. Mice may begin looking for protected nesting locations as temperatures cool, so we prefer having the guard in place before they establish a nest inside the hive.
Seasonal Use & Entrance Monitoring
Reduced entrances still require observation after installation. Dead bees, propolis, snow, ice, and other debris can reduce the available openings, so check the entrance periodically and keep usable passages available.
In spring, Lappe's Bee Supply does not use one fixed removal date for every colony. Colony strength, bee traffic, weather, entrance congestion, and the colony's ability to defend a larger opening are more useful indicators. Colonies in the same apiary can reach that point at different times.
Care, Reuse & Replacement
A metal entrance guard can remain reusable across seasons when its functional condition remains good. Scratches, staining, fastening marks, weather-related discoloration, minor surface oxidation, and other cosmetic evidence of hive use do not automatically mean the guard needs replacement.
Before reusing the guard, evaluate what affects its function: fit, intact bee openings, sound fastening areas, and the condition of the metal. Minor bends can generally be straightened when the guard remains structurally sound and can still sit flat and securely across the entrance.
Replace the guard when serious bending, damaged openings, excessive or structural corrosion, weakened fastening areas, or other damage prevents secure installation without unintended gaps. Lappe's Bee Supply has not established a fixed service life in seasons or years for this product.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will this mouse guard fit every 8-frame bottom board?
No universal drop-in fit is assumed. The guard is intended for standard 8-frame Langstroth equipment, but entrance width, side rails, and bottom-board construction can vary. Inspect and dry-fit the guard against the actual bottom board before trimming or fastening it.
What does “cut to fit” mean?
“Cut to fit” means the guard can be shortened when the actual bottom-board configuration requires it. The guard is supplied at 12 5/16" long and does not need to be trimmed when it already fits correctly at that length.
Are screws or nails included?
No. The product includes one metal entrance reducer / mouse guard. Screws or nails for fastening must be supplied separately.
Does this provide both entrance reduction and mouse protection?
Yes. The metal component reduces the available hive entrance while providing a physical mouse barrier around the designed openings used by worker bees. Correct installation without unintended gaps is important to the barrier.
When should I install mouse protection?
Lappe's Bee Supply installs mouse protection before mice establish a nest in the hive, particularly as colonies are prepared for fall and winter. After installation, continue checking that the openings remain usable and free of blockage.
When should I remove or open the reducer in spring?
Lappe's Bee Supply does not use a fixed spring removal date. Evaluate colony strength, bee traffic, weather, entrance congestion, and the colony's ability to defend a larger entrance. Increasing traffic may mean an entrance restriction that was appropriate earlier in the season should be reevaluated.
Can I reuse a scratched, stained, or slightly bent guard?
Cosmetic wear alone does not determine whether the guard needs replacement. A used guard can remain serviceable when the metal is sound, the openings are intact, the fastening areas remain functional, and it can still be fitted securely without unintended gaps.
Is this the correct mouse guard for a 10-frame hive?
No. This model is intended for 8-frame Langstroth equipment. For 10-frame equipment, use the corresponding 10-frame metal entrance reducer / mouse guard.
