Product Overview
Winter Bee Hive Moisture Board – 5, 8 & 10 Frame
Absorb moisture above the winter cluster as part of a complete cold-weather hive setup
The Winter Bee Hive Moisture Board is an absorbent moisture-management layer used above the colony during cold-weather wintering. As warm, moisture-laden air rises from the clustered bees, the board can take up moisture that might otherwise appear as free condensation on colder surfaces above the colony.
Choose the board that matches your 5-frame, 8-frame, or 10-frame hive. Lappe's Bee Supply's intended installation requires a correctly sized hive shim, which is sold separately. The inner cover is removed, the moisture board is placed on the shim with the dark/black side facing upward and away from the bees, and the outer cover is replaced. Additional insulation may be installed above the board when it is part of your winter configuration.

Compatibility: These moisture boards are designed for standard Langstroth-style 5-, 8-, and 10-frame hive equipment. Hive-body depth does not affect compatibility, so they can be used with deep, medium, or shallow boxes as long as the correct hive configuration is selected. Match the moisture board and required hive shim to the outside dimensions of your hive.
Use the moisture board that matches your hive size and verify the actual dimensions of nonstandard or mixed equipment before ordering.
For each hive where this moisture-management system will be used, plan on one appropriately sized moisture board plus the separate Assembled Wooden Bee Hive Shim – 5, 8 & 10 Frame.
How a Moisture Board Works in a Winter Hive
A winter hive moisture board is an absorbent component positioned above the colony to take up moisture reaching the upper part of the hive. It is not intended to eliminate every source of moisture or replace a properly configured winter setup.
In Iowa winter conditions, Lappe's Bee Supply sees moisture from the colony move toward the colder upper portion of the hive. With an absorbent board in the appropriate configuration, some of that moisture can show up as dampness or staining in the board rather than as free condensation collecting on cold top surfaces and potentially dripping toward the winter cluster.
Different colonies can expose their moisture boards to noticeably different amounts of moisture during the same general winter period. Colony moisture production, colony strength, weather exposure, insulation, and the overall winter configuration can all contribute to those differences.
How to Install the Winter Bee Hive Moisture Board
- Remove the inner cover.
- Place the correctly sized hive shim above the hive body.
- Place the correctly sized moisture board on the shim.
- Position the dark/black side upward and away from the bees.
- Add insulation above the moisture board if insulation is part of your winter setup.
- Replace the outer cover.
The hive shim is required for this installation and is sold separately. If additional top insulation is part of your setup, see the Inner Cover Bee Hive Insulation Sheet.
Lappe's Bee Supply Apiary Note: Damp Does Not Automatically Mean Failed
Judge the moisture board by its condition and function, not simply by staining or how many winters it has been used. Lappe's Bee Supply commonly sees dampness, discoloration, and staining after winter moisture exposure. Those appearance changes alone do not mean the board needs to be replaced.
Lappe's Bee Supply rule of thumb: Damp can be normal; persistently wet is a reason to investigate.
What to Expect During Winter
Moisture exposure is part of the job this board performs, so a normally functioning moisture board does not have to remain visually clean. After cold periods followed by warming, you may notice dampness, staining, or discoloration. One colony's board may also look considerably wetter than another colony's board.
Lappe's Bee Supply does not recommend repeatedly opening a winter colony solely to check the moisture board. If the hive already needs to be opened for feeding or another necessary reason, a mild, calm day can provide an opportunity to notice unusual saturation, deterioration, or excessive condensation.
When Persistent Moisture Calls for a Closer Look
A moisture board is one part of the winter hive configuration, not a cure for every source of water. If the board remains persistently saturated or substantial free water is present elsewhere in the hive, consider the complete setup rather than assuming the board itself is defective.
Factors to examine can include:
- Correct moisture-board installation and orientation
- Insulation and wrapping
- Entrance condition
- Outer-cover condition and positioning
- Rain or melting-snow intrusion
- Other equipment or configuration problems
- Overall colony and condensation conditions
The moisture board is not intended to correct outside water intrusion, a leaking or poorly positioned outer cover, blocked entrances, inadequate insulation, or another equipment problem that requires direct correction.
Reuse, Care & Replacement
Lappe's Bee Supply seasonal practice: In our Iowa apiaries, we normally install moisture boards before colder weather sets in as part of our winter preparation. In spring, we do not remove moisture boards during the first brief stretch of warm weather. We wait until warmer weather becomes consistent before removing the winter moisture-management setup.
After removal, Lappe's Bee Supply places used moisture boards in a well-ventilated location and allows them to dry thoroughly before evaluating them for reuse or storage. Lappe's Bee Supply does not assign a fixed useful lifespan or replace moisture boards based on age alone.
A dried board may remain serviceable when it is:
- Reasonably flat
- Firm
- Structurally sound
- Properly fitted
- Capable of drying after normal moisture exposure
- Still able to perform its intended function
More meaningful replacement signs include excessive softness, significant swelling or warping, badly crumbling edges, loss of structural integrity, persistent saturation, or an inability to fit and function correctly. Staining and discoloration by themselves are poor replacement indicators.
Is This Moisture Board Right for Your Winter Setup?
This moisture board is particularly applicable for beekeepers using compatible 5-, 8-, or 10-frame equipment who want an absorbent moisture-management layer above the colony during cold-weather wintering.
Not every colony or wintering system needs a moisture board. If you already use a different complete wintering configuration built around another arrangement of insulation, ventilation, inner covers, or moisture management, consider how that system is designed to function before adding another moisture-control component.
A different approach is also appropriate when the actual problem is outside water entering the hive or an equipment problem that needs to be corrected directly. Beekeepers comparing complete moisture-management configurations can also review the Bee Hive Winter Quilt Box with Pine Shavings & Moisture Board – 5, 8 & 10 Frame.
Important Expectations
The Winter Bee Hive Moisture Board is one component of a complete winter hive configuration. It should not be expected to guarantee improved winter survival, eliminate all hive condensation, correct outside water intrusion, or compensate for other problems in the winter setup. Lappe's Bee Supply also does not treat one specific upper-entrance arrangement as a universal rule for every colony, climate, and winter configuration.
For additional cold-weather guidance, see the Wintering Bees FAQ.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which side of the moisture board faces the bees?
Install the Winter Bee Hive Moisture Board with the dark/black side facing upward and away from the bees.
Do I remove the inner cover when installing the moisture board?
Yes. In Lappe's Bee Supply's intended installation, remove the inner cover, install the hive shim above the hive body, and place the moisture board on the shim.
Does the hive shim come with the moisture board?
No. The compatible hive shim is required for Lappe's Bee Supply's intended installation but is sold separately.
How many moisture boards do I need?
Normally, use one correctly sized moisture board for each hive where this moisture-board system will be installed.
Is it normal for the moisture board to become damp or stained?
Yes. Dampness, staining, and discoloration can occur during normal winter use. The board's physical condition and ability to dry are more useful indicators of serviceability than cosmetic appearance alone.
Can I reuse the moisture board next winter?
Yes, when the board dries thoroughly and remains reasonably flat, firm, structurally sound, properly fitted, and functional. Lappe's Bee Supply evaluates reuse by condition rather than by a fixed number of winters.
When should I replace a moisture board?
Consider replacement when the board develops excessive softness, significant swelling or warping, serious edge crumbling, loss of structural integrity, persistent saturation, or can no longer fit and function correctly.
What should I do if the moisture board stays saturated?
Evaluate the complete winter hive setup, including installation, board orientation, insulation, entrance condition, outer-cover condition, possible rain or melting-snow intrusion, and other potential moisture sources. Persistent saturation can indicate a broader moisture or equipment issue rather than a problem that replacing the board alone will correct.
Can insulation be placed above the moisture board?
Yes. Lappe's Bee Supply's winter setup allows additional insulation above the moisture board before the outer cover is replaced.
Does every hive need a moisture board?
No. The need for a moisture board depends on the complete winter configuration and moisture-management approach. Lappe's Bee Supply does not consider this product necessary for every colony or every wintering system.
