Product Overview

HiveAlive EZ Fondant Helper Tool

Keep a usable opening in packaged fondant where the winter cluster can reach it

The HiveAlive EZ Fondant Helper Tool is a simple fondant-feeding accessory designed to create and maintain an accessible opening in packaged fondant. The serrated cutting edge creates the opening in the package, while the longer prongs slide into the package and help hold that opening apart so the plastic does not simply close back over the exposed feed.

At Lappe's Bee Supply, we consider this a fondant-access accessory rather than a complete feeding system. Its value is straightforward: packaged fondant can remain largely contained while the helper maintains a defined access point for the bees. Correct placement still matters—the opening needs to be positioned where the winter cluster can readily reach it, and the hive must provide enough vertical clearance for the complete feeding setup.

Why Use an EZ Fondant Helper?

The EZ Fondant Helper performs one narrow but useful job: it helps maintain access to fondant while allowing most of the feed to remain inside its original package. This makes it particularly useful for winter and emergency feeding arrangements where packaged fondant is positioned above the cluster.

Is This Fondant Accessory Right for Your Feeding Setup?

The HiveAlive EZ Fondant Helper is primarily designed for use with HiveAlive packaged fondant patties, allowing most of the feed to remain inside its original package while the helper maintains an accessible opening. It is especially practical for feeding packaged fondant above the winter cluster.

This accessory may be less relevant if your fondant-feeding method does not involve maintaining an opening in the original package. It also does not provide additional hive clearance. Depending on the fondant package and hive configuration, a feeding shim, empty super, or another suitable arrangement may be necessary.

Before ordering, confirm that:

  • You plan to feed HiveAlive fondant while it remains in its package.
  • Your hive configuration can accommodate the packaged fondant above the cluster.
  • Fondant and any equipment needed to create additional space are purchased separately.

What's Included and What You'll Need

Included

  • 1 HiveAlive EZ Fondant Helper Tool

Supplied separately

  • HiveAlive packaged fondant patties
  • Hive and other beekeeping equipment
  • A feeding shim or another suitable clearance arrangement when the packaged fondant requires additional vertical space

How to Use the HiveAlive EZ Fondant Helper

  1. Use the serrated cutting edge to create an opening in the fondant package.
  2. Insert the longer prongs so they support and hold the opening apart.
  3. Insert the helper carefully, particularly when the fondant is very cold or hard.
  4. Avoid forcing the longer prongs completely through the opposite side of the package.
  5. Turn the prepared fondant package so the accessible opening faces the bees.
  6. Position the opening where the cluster can readily reach it.
  7. Confirm that the hive configuration provides enough vertical clearance for the complete packaged-fondant setup.
  8. Close the hive without forcing hive components together around the package.

Lappe's Bee Supply Apiary Note: Available Feed Must Also Be Accessible

Winter feed is most useful when it is both available and accessible to the cluster. In our experience, maintaining a usable opening where the cluster can readily reach it is more important than simply exposing a larger area of fondant.

In our use with HiveAlive fondant patties, we've found that the longer prongs help keep the package plastic from settling back over the opening after it has been cut.

When conditions permit an appropriate winter inspection, check both how much fondant remains and whether the accessible opening is still positioned where the cluster can reach it. A package may contain plenty of feed while its accessible portion is no longer well positioned.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Forcing the helper into very cold or hard fondant

Fondant and its packaging are easier to work with when they are not extremely cold. Insert the helper carefully rather than forcing it farther into the package than intended.

Overlooking hive clearance

The helper itself is small, but the packaged fondant still requires adequate space. Plan the complete feeding configuration before closing the hive. An assembled wooden bee hive shim is one potential way to provide additional clearance when the feeding setup requires it.

Care, Reuse, and Replacement

The EZ Fondant Helper has no moving parts and no verified scheduled maintenance interval. After the fondant is consumed, the EZ Fondant helper can be removed and reused.

Judge the tool primarily by its physical condition and function. Minor staining, residue, discoloration, or other cosmetic evidence of use does not by itself mean the helper needs to be replaced.

  • Sound but shifted: Reposition it.
  • Cosmetic wear only: Continue using it if it remains structurally sound and functional.
  • Cracked, broken, or significantly deformed: Replace it when the damage prevents it from reliably maintaining the opening.

Condition is a better replacement guide than age. A used helper does not need to look new to remain serviceable.

What the EZ Fondant Helper Does—and Doesn't Do

The HiveAlive EZ Fondant Helper performs one specific function: it creates and helps maintain an opening in packaged fondant. It does not determine whether a colony needs supplemental feed or control how much fondant the colony consumes.

Colony food stores, seasonal conditions, weather, hive configuration, and beekeeper management all influence feeding needs and colony response. Evaluate the helper by whether it remains intact and functional—not by consumption rate, colony strength, or overwintering outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the HiveAlive EZ Fondant Helper actually do?

The HiveAlive EZ Fondant Helper creates and maintains an accessible opening in packaged fondant. The serrated cutting edge creates the opening, and the longer prongs help hold the package open at that access point.

Is the EZ Fondant Helper a complete bee feeder?

No. The EZ Fondant Helper is a fondant-access accessory, not a complete feeding system. Fondant, the hive, and any equipment required to provide additional clearance are separate.

How many EZ Fondant Helpers are included?

Lappe's Bee Supply SKU WNTS-2357 includes one HiveAlive EZ Fondant Helper Tool per unit ordered.

Do I leave the fondant in its original package?

Yes. This accessory is designed for a feeding method in which the fondant remains largely inside its original package while the helper maintains an accessible opening.

Where should I position the fondant opening?

Position the accessible opening where the cluster can readily reach it. When packaged fondant is placed above the winter cluster, turn the prepared package so the maintained opening faces the bees.

Can the EZ Fondant Helper be reused?

Yes. A helper can be reused while it remains intact, maintains its intended shape, and continues to hold the fondant-package opening apart properly.

What if fondant remains but the bees cannot readily reach it?

Check the package position, cluster access, and overall feeding setup before assuming the helper has failed. A sound helper can continue maintaining the opening even when the package has shifted or the opening is no longer well positioned relative to the cluster.

Will I need a feeding shim or extra hive space?

Possibly. The hive must provide enough vertical clearance for the complete packaged-fondant setup. Depending on the package and hive configuration, a feeding shim, empty super, or another suitable arrangement may be necessary.

These little gizmos are great. THey keep the fondant centered on the opening in my inner cover and make all the fondant easier to reach by the bees.
