What Does R8 Insulation Mean?
R8 is the manufacturer's stated insulation rating for the Bee Cozy. R-value describes resistance to heat flow; in general, a higher R-value indicates greater resistance to heat transfer. The rating describes the insulation level of the wrap rather than a guaranteed temperature inside the hive.
The fiberglass insulation helps resist heat transfer while the exterior provides a windbreak. This gives the hive another layer of protection during sustained cold, winter wind, and late-winter temperature swings.

How to Install the Bee Cozy
- Confirm that the wrap matches the hive's 8-frame or 10-frame format and that the hive is the intended 2-story configuration.
- Inspect the hive for protruding handles, cleats, hardware, sharp corners, or other areas that could interfere with fit or damage the wrap.
- Roll or press some air out of the Bee Cozy. We find this makes the wrap easier to slide over the hive and reduces unnecessary stress at corners and projections.
- Carefully slide the compressed wrap over the hive without forcing it.
- Position the seam at the front.
- Make sure the required upper and lower hive entrances remain open and unobstructed.
- Maintain the hive's slight forward tip for drainage as part of the winter moisture-management setup.
- Allow approximately one day for the wrap to regain its full thickness after compression.

A Bee Cozy does not need to fit tightly against every side of the hive to be the correct size. In our experience, a properly sized wrap may have some give along the sides while fitting more closely around the corners, especially after it has fully re-expanded.
Before assuming the wrap is the wrong size, confirm that you selected the correct 8-frame or 10-frame version and allow the wrap to fully re-expand. Some side give by itself does not indicate an incorrect fit.
When to Put the Bee Cozy On and Take It Off
We normally install our Bee Cozy wraps after temperatures are consistently below approximately 50°F. We use this as a practical weather reference rather than a fixed calendar date.

Winter Insulation Does Not Replace Moisture or Food Management
The Bee Cozy is one part of winter hive management. It does not replace adequate food stores, open hive entrances, drainage, ventilation, or appropriate top-side moisture management.
In our winter setup, we keep the upper and lower entrances clear, maintain a slight forward hive tip for drainage, and use suitable top insulation or moisture-absorbing material when needed. The goal is not to make the hive completely airtight.

What to Expect From the Fit and Appearance
Temporary wrinkles, fold marks, and a flattened appearance can occur after storage or shipment. These conditions are normally cosmetic when the exterior, seams, insulation, and overall shape remain intact.
If the wrap arrives compressed, allow approximately one day for it to regain its full thickness before evaluating its final appearance.
Care, Inspection and Storage
Inspect the Bee Cozy during and after the season for punctures, tears, seam damage, exposed or displaced insulation, and rodent damage. Minor dirt, scuffing, wrinkles, fold marks, and temporary compression do not necessarily make an otherwise intact wrap unusable.
Mice can puncture, shred, contaminate, or nest in the material. Use appropriate rodent protection when needed during winter. After removing the wrap, press out excess air and store it dry where rodents cannot reach it.

Repair or Replace?
A small, isolated puncture or short tear does not automatically require replacement when the insulation remains in place and the damaged area can be completely covered with compatible self-adhesive poly-tarp repair material.

- Damage is too large or irregular to seal completely.
- Several damaged areas are present.
- Insulation is missing, badly compressed, displaced, or exposed.
- The seam or overall shape is damaged.
- The wrap no longer fits or stays positioned correctly.
- Rodents have extensively shredded, contaminated, or nested in the material.
Inspect repaired areas before each winter. Retire the wrap if a patch is lifting, an opening is spreading, or the wrap can no longer maintain dependable coverage.
Receiving and Inspecting Your Bee Cozy
Bee Cozy wraps may be folded or compressed for compact shipment. Carefully unpack the wrap without using a knife or other sharp object near the material. After the wrap has fully re-expanded, inspect the exterior, seams, insulation, and overall shape before installation.
Lappe's Bee Supply employees visually inspect the wrap and packaging for obvious punctures, tears, damaged seams, or other visible storage or shipping damage before fulfillment. We do not fully expand and test-fit every wrap before it leaves our facility.
