Bee Hive Winter Quilt Box with Pine Shavings & Moisture Board — 5, 8 & 10 Frame

Manage Winter Hive-Top Moisture with Pine Shavings, Ventilation, and Built-In Feeding Clearance

The Bee Hive Winter Quilt Box with Pine Shavings & Moisture Board from Lappe's Bee Supply is a hive-top wintering component designed to help manage moisture above the honey bee colony. It combines an absorbent layer of pine wood shavings, screened side ventilation, an adjustable front opening, and a moisture board in one winter hive setup. Approximately 3/4 inch of clearance underneath the quilt box also provides space for supplemental winter feed when needed.

Available in 5-frame, 8-frame, and 10-frame sizes, this black-painted quilt box is designed for matching hive equipment. Through our experience overwintering honey bee colonies in Iowa, we've found that managing moisture near the top of the hive is an important part of winter preparation.

Winter Quilt Box Features and Benefits

  • Included pine wood shavings: Provide an absorbent layer above the wintering colony to help manage moisture in the hive-top area.
  • Included moisture board: Adds another moisture-management component above the pine shavings.
  • Screened side ventilation: Provides ventilation openings through the quilt-box compartment while helping keep larger debris and pests out of the openings.
  • Adjustable front opening: Heavy-duty plastic entrance discs rotate between three positions: fully open for bee access, ventilation holes only, or completely closed. This allows beekeepers to adjust the openings based on their hive's needs.
  • Approximately 3/4-inch feeding clearance: Provides room beneath the quilt box for supplemental winter patties or dry sugar when appropriate for the colony.
  • Black-painted finish: Arrives with its exterior finish already applied.
  • Three frame-size options: Choose the 5-frame, 8-frame, or 10-frame version to match your hive equipment.

What Is a Winter Quilt Box and How Does It Work?

A winter quilt box is a hive-top component that holds absorbent material above the wintering honey bee colony. Its purpose is to help manage moisture in the upper hive while working with the ventilation and insulation arrangements used for winter.

During cold weather, moisture produced within the colony can move upward and condense on colder hive surfaces. Excessive condensation, particularly when it collects above the winter cluster and drips downward, is an important winter-management concern.

This quilt box provides a compartment of pine shavings above the colony. The shavings can absorb moisture that reaches the quilt-box area, while the screened ventilation openings provide a path for air movement. The moisture board forms another part of the upper moisture-management system.

The quilt box is not intended to remove every trace of moisture from the hive. Some dampness in the shavings can be normal. The goal is to manage moisture conditions without creating additional problems from poor equipment fit, blocked ventilation, or persistently saturated materials.

Choosing the Correct Quilt Box Size

Choose the winter quilt box that matches the frame format of your hive equipment—not the number of bees in the colony or how severe you expect winter to be.

Quilt Box Size Exterior Dimensions (L × W × H) Intended Hive Equipment
5-Frame 20"L x 9 3/8"W x 6 3/8"H Corresponding 5-frame hive equipment
8-Frame 20"L x 14"W x 6 3/8"H Corresponding 8-frame hive equipment
10-Frame 20"L x 16"W x 6 3/8"H Corresponding 10-frame hive equipment

Before ordering: Match the quilt box to your existing hive equipment. If you use hive bodies or covers from different manufacturers, compare their dimensions to ensure the quilt box will sit properly within your winter hive setup.

What Is Included?

  • One winter quilt box in the selected 5-frame, 8-frame, or 10-frame size
  • Pine wood shavings
  • Moisture board
  • Black-painted exterior finish

Sold separately: Compatible hive equipment, the outer cover, and supplemental winter feed such as patties or dry sugar.

Important: The pine shavings are packaged in a plastic bag for shipping. Remove them from the bag and distribute them inside the quilt box before installation. Do not leave the shavings sealed in the bag during use.

How to Set Up the Winter Quilt Box

Hive stacking order (bottom to top): Hive body → optional supplemental winter feed → quilt box with pine shavings → moisture board → outer cover.

  1. Confirm the frame size. Select the quilt box that matches your 5-frame, 8-frame, or 10-frame hive equipment.
  2. Prepare the pine shavings. Remove the shavings from their shipping bag and distribute them evenly in the quilt-box compartment. Do not pack them tightly.
  3. Position the quilt box. Place it above the wintering colony, ensuring that it seats properly on the equipment below.
  4. Check feeding clearance. The approximately 3/4-inch space beneath the quilt box can accommodate supplemental patties or dry sugar when needed, provided the feed fits without interfering with proper seating.
  5. Position the moisture board. Use the included moisture board above the pine-shaving compartment as part of the hive-top arrangement.
  6. Complete the hive stack. Install the compatible outer cover and confirm that the upper equipment is properly seated.
  7. Check ventilation. Keep the screened side openings unobstructed and evaluate the adjustable front opening as part of your overall winter ventilation plan.

The quilt box should sit properly within the completed hive stack. Avoid forcing mismatched components together or allowing feeding materials to interfere with the fit of the equipment.

When Should You Install and Remove a Winter Quilt Box?

Lappe's normally installs winter quilt boxes during fall winterization, before sustained cold weather makes frequent hive manipulation undesirable. The exact timing depends on local conditions and the beekeeper's winter-management schedule.

  • Fall: Install during winter preparation after evaluating colony condition, food stores, and the planned hive configuration.
  • Winter: Leave the quilt box in place while its moisture-management function is needed.
  • Suitable winter weather: Check accessible hive-top components when conditions permit and the inspection can be completed without unnecessarily disturbing the colony.
  • Late winter: Use the feeding clearance for supplemental feed if colony conditions make feeding necessary.
  • Spring: Reevaluate the hive's seasonal needs and remove the quilt box when its winter-specific function is no longer required.

Lappe's Apiary Notes: What the Pine Shavings Can Tell You

One of the practical advantages we have found when using quilt boxes in Iowa is the information available during a hive-top winter check. When weather conditions permit, we can inspect the moisture board and pine shavings without immediately dismantling the main wintering brood boxes.

We pay particular attention to the condition of the pine shavings. They are not simply material placed in the box; their moisture pattern can provide a useful clue about what is happening near the top of the hive.

Black-painted bee hive winter quilt box filled with pine shavings and two yellow adjustable entrance discs

Inside the Winter Quilt Box: Pine wood shavings fill the absorbent compartment, while the yellow adjustable entrance discs provide options for bee access, ventilation, or complete closure.

Our rule of thumb is: “Pay attention to the trend, not a single damp spot.”

Some localized dampness can occur without indicating that the quilt box has failed. Persistently wet or increasingly saturated shavings are more concerning, particularly when unwanted condensation is also appearing elsewhere in the hive-top arrangement.

When we notice concerning moisture conditions, we look beyond the shavings themselves. Ventilation openings, equipment fit, moisture-board condition, and continuing condensation are all worth evaluating.

The condition of the shavings is one useful indicator, not a complete diagnosis of colony health or wintering success.

Winter Quilt Box Maintenance and Troubleshooting

What if the pine shavings become damp?

Some dampness does not automatically mean the quilt box needs attention. Check the extent and pattern of moisture. If the shavings become heavily or persistently saturated, evaluate the absorbent material, ventilation, moisture board, and surrounding hive-top conditions.

What if condensation continues below the quilt box?

Check whether the quilt box is seated correctly, whether the ventilation openings are blocked, and whether the shavings or moisture board have become excessively wet or deteriorated. A quilt box cannot compensate for every moisture problem created by the overall hive configuration.

When should the pine shavings be replaced?

Replace the shavings when their condition indicates they are no longer suitable for use, including persistent saturation or deterioration. There is no single replacement interval that applies to every colony or winter.

Replacement materials are available through our Replacement Wood Shavings for Bee Hive Winter Quilt Box product in matching frame-size options.

How long does a winter quilt box last?

There is no fixed service life. From Lappe's experience, a properly maintained wooden quilt box can remain usable across multiple winter seasons when its fit and function remain sound. Moisture-exposed components, especially the moisture board, may deteriorate before the main wooden box.

Evaluate the condition of individual components rather than replacing the entire quilt box based on age or cosmetic appearance alone. Replace or repair damaged components when their condition affects the equipment's intended function.

Is This Winter Quilt Box Right for Your Hives?

This quilt box is worth considering when you want to add an absorbent hive-top layer with ventilation to your wintering system, particularly where upper-hive condensation has been a concern.

It may be a useful choice if you:

  • Use matching 5-frame, 8-frame, or 10-frame hive equipment.
  • Want pine shavings and a moisture board included with your winter quilt box.
  • Need a hive-top arrangement that provides approximately 3/4 inch of supplemental feeding clearance.
  • Prefer a winter component that can provide visible clues about upper-hive moisture during suitable inspections.
  • Are preparing colonies for cold or variable winter weather where condensation management deserves attention.

When might another approach make more sense? If your existing winter configuration already manages upper-hive moisture, insulation, and supplemental feeding effectively, another quilt box may add little practical value. A quilt box is not equipment every beekeeper needs simply because the climate is cold.

Different wintering components serve different purposes. A winter candy board feeder focuses on supplemental feeding, while winter insulation equipment addresses heat loss. A quilt box primarily provides an absorbent hive-top layer with ventilation and, in this design, limited feeding clearance. The best arrangement depends on what your existing setup needs.

What a Winter Quilt Box Cannot Do

A winter quilt box is one part of a complete winter-management plan. It cannot guarantee colony survival or correct problems unrelated to its intended function.

In particular, it does not replace:

  • Adequate winter food stores
  • Appropriate Varroa mite monitoring and management
  • A sufficiently healthy and well-populated wintering colony
  • Attention to queen problems and disease
  • Proper hive configuration, equipment fit, and seasonal management

Winter results vary with colony condition, food availability, weather, pests, disease, and beekeeper management. The quilt box is designed to help with hive-top moisture conditions, not to overcome all wintering challenges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the winter quilt box come with pine shavings and a moisture board?

Yes. The Bee Hive Winter Quilt Box includes pine wood shavings and a moisture board. Remove the shavings from their plastic shipping bag and spread them evenly inside the quilt box before use.

Can I use an 8-frame quilt box on a 10-frame hive?

No. Select the quilt box that matches the frame format of your hive equipment. Lappe's does not recommend adapting an 8-frame quilt box to a 10-frame hive or mixing other mismatched sizes.

Can I feed bees underneath the winter quilt box?

Yes. This quilt box provides approximately 3/4 inch of clearance beneath it for supplemental winter feed, such as patties or dry sugar, when needed. The feeding material must fit without interfering with the hive-top equipment.

Should the pine shavings stay completely dry?

No. Some dampness can occur during normal winter use. Persistent or increasing saturation, especially alongside continuing unwanted condensation, is a reason to inspect the hive-top moisture-management system more closely.

Does a winter quilt box guarantee that bees will survive the winter?

No. A winter quilt box helps manage moisture above the colony but cannot guarantee survival. Food stores, colony health, Varroa pressure, queen condition, weather, and overall winter management remain important.
