Product Overview

8 Frame Double Wax Dipped Screened Bottom Board with Entrance Reducer - Assembled

Give your hive a durable, well-ventilated foundation with the 8 Frame Double Wax Dipped Screened Bottom Board with Entrance Reducer from Lappe’s Bee Supply. This fully assembled screened bottom board is designed for standard 8-frame Langstroth beehives and provides the base your hive needs for support, airflow, entrance control, and practical colony management.

The screened bottom board sits beneath your hive body and helps support the full hive stack while allowing airflow through the lower portion of the hive. This added ventilation can help support temperature and moisture management during active beekeeping seasons, especially when paired with proper hive placement and colony management.

This bottom board also includes a wax dipped entrance reducer, giving you a simple way to adjust the hive entrance based on colony strength, weather, robbing pressure, pest concerns, and seasonal needs. Use a smaller entrance when the colony is young, weak, or preparing for colder weather, and open the entrance wider when the colony is strong and active.

Each wooden component is professionally Double Wax Dipped for long-lasting protection against moisture, weather exposure, swelling, warping, and decay. Unlike unfinished woodenware, this screened bottom board requires no painting or staining before use.

Whether you are building a new 8-frame hive, replacing worn equipment, or upgrading to Double Wax Dipped woodenware, this assembled screened bottom board and entrance reducer set is built for practical use in the bee yard.

Premium Double Wax Dipped Protection

Every wooden component in this screened bottom board set is protected using Lappe’s premium Double Wax Dipping Process. During this process, the woodenware is submerged in hot wax so the wax can penetrate deep into the wood fibers.

This helps defend the bottom board and entrance reducer against:

  • Moisture
  • Weather exposure
  • Rot and decay
  • Swelling
  • Warping
  • Long-term outdoor wear

Unlike paint, which mainly protects the outside surface, wax becomes part of the wood itself. This creates durable, low-maintenance woodenware that is ready for outdoor use without painting.

Over time, the exterior wax color may naturally lighten from sun and weather exposure. This is cosmetic only. The wax absorbed into the wood continues helping protect the equipment for years of use.

Screened Bottom Board for Added Airflow

A screened bottom board forms the base of your hive while allowing air to move through the lower portion of the hive. This added airflow can help support ventilation during warm weather and may help reduce excess moisture when used as part of a properly managed hive setup.

Many beekeepers prefer screened bottom boards for additional ventilation, especially in active colonies or warmer conditions. The screened design can also help with mite monitoring when used with compatible monitoring methods and equipment.

A screened bottom board is a practical choice for beekeepers who want a more open lower hive design while still maintaining a stable base for standard 8-frame Langstroth equipment.

Wax Dipped Entrance Reducer for Seasonal Hive Management

The included entrance reducer gives you a simple way to adjust the hive entrance throughout the year.

A smaller entrance can help when:

  • Starting a new colony
  • Installing package bees
  • Managing a weaker colony
  • Reducing robbing pressure
  • Helping bees defend the entrance
  • Preparing hives for colder weather

A larger entrance can help when:

  • The colony is strong
  • Bee traffic is heavy
  • Nectar flow is active
  • Warmer weather increases hive activity
  • More ventilation and movement are needed at the entrance

Because the entrance reducer is also wax dipped, it receives the same protective finish as the bottom board for a consistent, durable hive setup.

How This Screened Bottom Board Fits Into Your Hive

Place the screened bottom board on your hive stand as the first piece of equipment in the hive stack. The deep hive body sits directly on top of the bottom board, creating the main lower entrance for the colony.

The included entrance reducer fits at the front entrance and can be adjusted based on the needs of the colony. As the colony grows or seasonal conditions change, the entrance size can be modified to support traffic flow, defense, ventilation, and winter preparation.

This bottom board is designed to work with standard 8-frame Langstroth hive bodies, honey supers, telescoping lids, inner covers, feeders, and other compatible 8-frame hive components.

Product Notes

This screened bottom board is assembled using commercial-grade woodenware. Some knots, cracks, surface variations, and natural wood characteristics may be visible and do not affect normal use.

Some areas of the wax dipped woodenware may appear lighter or less coated than others because wax can absorb into the wood differently from piece to piece. The equipment is still wax dipped and protected.

Over time, sun and weather exposure may lighten the outer wax appearance. This is cosmetic only and does not mean the wax protection is gone.

This product includes the screened bottom board and entrance reducer only. Hive bodies, honey supers, frames, foundation, covers, feeders, queen excluders, and bees are sold separately unless included with another kit or combo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this screened bottom board come assembled?

Yes. This 8-frame screened bottom board arrives assembled and ready to use.

Does this include an entrance reducer?

Yes. This product includes a wax dipped entrance reducer.

Does this fit standard 8-frame Langstroth hives?

Yes. This screened bottom board is designed for standard 8-frame Langstroth beehives.

What is a screened bottom board used for?

A screened bottom board forms the base of the hive while allowing airflow through the lower portion of the hive. It supports the hive stack, provides the lower entrance, and helps with ventilation as part of a complete hive setup.

Why choose a screened bottom board instead of a solid bottom board?

A screened bottom board provides more airflow through the lower hive area, which many beekeepers prefer for ventilation and moisture management. A solid bottom board provides a more enclosed traditional hive base. The best choice depends on your climate, management style, and colony needs.

Can a screened bottom board help with ventilation?

Yes. The screened design allows air movement through the lower portion of the hive, which can help support ventilation during warm weather and active colony periods.

Can this be used for mite monitoring?

A screened bottom board can support mite monitoring when used with compatible monitoring methods or accessories. This product listing does not specify an included monitoring tray, so any tray or monitoring board should be confirmed separately before adding that claim to the live page.

Why use an entrance reducer?

An entrance reducer allows you to adjust the size of the hive entrance. This can help smaller colonies defend the entrance, reduce robbing pressure, conserve warmth in colder weather, and manage traffic flow during different seasons.

Is the entrance reducer wax dipped too?

Yes. The included entrance reducer is also wax dipped for added durability and weather resistance.

Does this bottom board need to be painted?

No. The Double Wax Dipped finish protects the woodenware and eliminates the need for painting before use.

Is this compatible with other 8-frame Double Wax Dipped equipment?

Yes. This bottom board is designed to pair with standard 8-frame Langstroth hive bodies, honey supers, inner covers, telescoping lids, feeders, and other compatible 8-frame hive components.

Will the wax color fade over time?

Yes, the outside color may naturally lighten from sun and weather exposure. This is cosmetic only; the wax absorbed into the wood continues helping protect the equipment.

    Will purchase again!

Made very well. Extremely pleased with the quality of this bottom board. I purchase from Lappe’s anytime I’m in need and they have it. I always mention you guys to other beekeeper friends. I’d much rather buy from a ‘small business’ supply store vs the Walmarts of beekeeping.
